Percent Number Tones Correct (PNTC)

The Percent Number Tones Correct (PNTC) analysis aligns the syllables of each IPA Target and IPA Actual word and compares their numbered tone values.

Use PNTC for transcriptions that represent tone with superscript digits. See IPA Transcription for information about tone numbers.

Before you begin

Check word boundaries, syllabification, phone alignment, and tone-number placement on IPA Target and IPA Actual. These determine the syllable alignment and the tone assigned to each syllable.

How PNTC is calculated

For each aligned syllable pair, equal numbered tone values are correct and unequal values are substituted. Two syllables with no numbered tone also count as correct. A target tone aligned with an unmarked actual syllable is deleted, while a tone on an actual syllable aligned with an unmarked target syllable is substituted.

An unaligned target syllable increments both Syllables Deleted and # Deleted. An unaligned actual syllable increments Syllables Epenthesized but is not included in the PNTC denominator.

PNTC = # Correct / (# Correct + # Substituted + # Deleted) × 100.
