Phone Clusters
The Phone Clusters analysis searches IPA data with predefined PhonEx patterns for consonant clusters, vowel clusters, or singleton phones. Use the Other (specify below) choice to report on a custom phone pattern with the same summary and participant breakdown.
Before you begin
Check the IPA Target and IPA Actual tiers and their phone alignment. The analysis searches IPA Target by word by default and can include the phones aligned with each match.
Parameters
Cluster Type selects a predefined primary PhonEx pattern and updates the report title. The following choices are available:
| Cluster type | Matches |
|---|---|
| Consonant Clusters | Sequences of consonants. This is the default. |
| Vowel Clusters | Sequences of vowels. |
| Consonant Clusters (Monosyllabic) | Two or more consonants in an onset or coda within a syllable. |
| Consonant Clusters (Disyllabic) | A consonant sequence across a coda-onset syllable boundary. |
| Singleton Consonants | Individual consonants outside a consonant sequence. |
| Singleton Vowels | Individual vowels outside a vowel sequence. |
| Other (specify below) | Clears the primary pattern so you can enter another expression. |
Include aligned phones is enabled by default. Use the IPA Target and IPA Actual matchers to filter the aligned result. The remaining Tier, Word, Syllable, Additional Tier Data, and Participant controls use the common query parameters.
Report output
The report records changed query parameters and organizes matching rows into:
- Summary tables for the selected participants;
- Aggregate inventories of IPA Target, IPA Actual, and alignment combinations; and
- Listing by Participant and Session, with the individual result rows for each participant and session.
Result tables retain session, speaker, tier, range, and matched IPA data, together with any additional data selected in the parameters.
