Vocalization
The Vocalization analysis inventories the phonetic forms in selected records. It reports consonants, vowels, syllable and whole-form structures, harmony patterns, and participant-level summary measures.
This specialized analysis examines IPA Actual data. It does not compare IPA Target with IPA Actual to identify the liquid-gliding or vocalization phonological process. For target-to-actual process analysis, use the relevant analysis under Phonological Processes.
Before you begin
For each record that you want to include:
- enter an Orthography value and an IPA Actual transcription;
- check the syllabification of IPA Actual; and
- assign the record to a speaker.
The report uses Orthography to separate non-word vocalizations from words.
Enter yyy for an unintelligible form that has an IPA transcription. Phon
places these records in Vocalizations; it places other matched Orthography
values in Words. See Orthography
for the supported untranscribed-data codes.
Parameters
The first page of the analysis assistant contains the standard Data Tiers query controls. The default query:
- searches by word on Orthography using the regular expression
.+; - requires an aligned IPA Actual word matching
.+; and - adds Actual Syllabification to the result data.
Use the query controls and participant filter to restrict the records included in the report. On the Parameters page, change Report Title when the default Vocalization Analysis title does not identify the sample clearly.
Reading the report
The report begins with Readme and a global Summary section. Summary tables have the columns Category, Item, and Value, with one table for each participant. Measures include counts per session, inventory sizes, syllables per form, CV and CC structure percentages, and consonant- and vowel-harmony percentages.
Each participant then has a section containing Vocalizations, Words, or both, depending on the matched Orthography values. Each available group contains the following tables:

| Vocalization Structure | Inventory, count, and percentage of structures for complete forms. The table keeps this name in both the Vocalizations and Words groups. |
| Multi-syllabic Consonant Harmony | Listings for forms of at least two syllables in which consonant harmony was detected. |
| Multi-syllabic Vowel Harmony | Listings for forms of at least two syllables in which vowel harmony was detected. |
| CVC Consonant Harmony | Listings for CVC forms in which consonant harmony was detected. |
Inventory tables are followed by a by Session version. These tables place the count and percentage for each selected session in separate columns. A harmony table can be empty when no matching pattern is detected.
Tables specific to Words
The Phonetic Type-Token Ratio table reports the number of distinct IPA Actual word forms, the total number of forms, and their ratio. Diacritics and case do not distinguish types in this calculation.
Tables specific to Vocalizations
The Mean Babble Level tables classify each yyy form by the number of
distinct consonant types in its IPA Actual transcription:

Consonant types are distinguished by place and manner. Glides and glottals are not counted for this measure. The report provides both an overall inventory and a by-session table.
