Timeline

The Timeline view provides a visual overview of the entire session media with record segments displayed as a grid aligned to the waveform. It opens as a bottom panel below the transcript.

The view displays from top to bottom:

  • Toolbar — Segmentation controls, playback, export, participant and tier filters, record operations, and font size
  • Time ruler — Time axis for the entire session duration
  • Waveform — Full session waveform with segment boundaries marked
  • Record grid — Records organized by participant in rows, showing orthography and segment times for each record

Toolbar

The Timeline toolbar provides:

  • Start Segmentation... — Enter segmentation mode for creating record segments from media. See Segmentation.
  • Play segment — Play the selected record's segment
  • Export segment — Export the selected segment as an audio file
  • Participants — Filter which participants are shown in the record grid
  • Tiers — Select which tiers are displayed in the record grid cells
  • Split record — Split the selected record at the playback position
  • Move records — Adjust record positions along the timeline

Record Grid

The record grid shows records organized by participant. Each participant has a labeled row with a role badge (e.g., Investigator) and name. Records are displayed as cells within each participant's row, positioned along the timeline according to their segment times.

Each record cell shows the record number, a preview of the tier data (e.g., orthography), and the segment time range. Click a record cell to select it and navigate to that record in the transcript.

An Unidentified row appears at the bottom for records not assigned to a participant.

Segmentation

Segmentation mode allows you to create record segments by listening to the media and pressing a key to mark segment boundaries.

To begin segmentation:

  1. Click Start Segmentation... in the toolbar.
  2. Configure the segmentation options (participant, starting position).
  3. Listen to the media and press the segmentation key to mark each segment boundary.

During segmentation, new records are created automatically with the segment times set to the marked boundaries.
